Short description of an invention: AquAsZero is the only water purification system with high adsorption capacity both in As(V) and the 60 times more toxic As(III),through intermediate oxidation with Mn4+ atoms. The powerfull adsorption of arsenic on the surface of AquAsZero allows safe burial of the saturated material in sanitary landfills as inert waste. AquAsZero is a patented (no. 20100100541/28-9-2010) product of research within the frame of the european project for “Research for the benefit of SMEs” funded directly by the European Union and has been awarded the 1st prize in the “Greece Innovates!” competition in 2011.

Short description of an invention: The invention refers to the use of porous conductive (metallic or oxidic) films in contact with a solid electrolyte (e.g. stabilized zirconia or beta “-Al2O3) for the catalytic conversion of chemical compounds to other chemical compounds via external or internal application of an electrical potential or current between the conductive catalyst film and a second counter electrode film also in contact with the solid electrolyte. This set-up permits easy application of the recently discovered phenomenon of Non-Faradaic Electrochemical Modification of Catalytic Activity (NEMCA) for the improvement of catalytic properties (activity, selectivity) of metals and conductive metal oxides.

The high yields, the high production rates and the very low cost of the catalysts that are employed in the developed method lead to the production of materials that cost much less than commercially available materials of similar or lower quality.

The invention addresses also photocatalytic redox reactions produced by UV and visible light. The photocatalyst is obtained by precipitating titanium dioxide on a sol of manganese dioxide. The method of the invention comprises the steps of providing a mixture of a) hydrated manganese dioxide sol, b) titanium solution and c) NH3 solution, and, the processing of the above.
